HOW TO FROST COOKIES - WITHOUT ROYAL ICING

I see a lot of tutorials on making royal icing cookies, but that's just too much work!  Who has time to make the icing and then pipe it around on a cookie and fill it in later?  Here's my "cheater's" way to do it and it doesn't involve making royal icing or a piping tool - just some powdered sugar and a butter knife!  This is the way my mom always decorates her sugar cookies for Christmas and they're always beautiful.  What would we do without our mothers and their wise ways?

Also, I see that I managed to use a picture that showed the frosting globbed on the side of the cookie.  This is a carefully constructed illustration to show you that everyone makes mistakes and your cookies don't have to be perfect (or, maybe it was really late at night and I was trying to take pictures and frost cookies and I was delirious).

The frosting will have a nice, firm top on it once it's dried, so you don't have to worry about being overly careful with them if you're freezing or gifting the cookies.

time: 5 min. to make frosting
makes: 12-24 cookies
YOU WILL NEED:

1 cup powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. almond flavoring
1-2 tsp. milk or water
food coloring
12-24 Cookies to frost

SOCKS LABEL - free pritnable

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9lX15rLaMHpU1RvdUJDbW9iM2c/edit?usp=sharing

I know, this seems a bit silly to have a label for socks, but sometimes you just need one.  Maybe you knit some, or found a good deal on a large package of them and want to gift each pair separately, this label should come in handy!

Just print it on the paper of your choice, then either wrap the whole label around the socks and tape it together, or use the shorter labels and punch a hole on either side and string a ribbon through to tie around socks.

CHALKBOARD STYLE CHRISTMAS TAGS - free printable

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9lX15rLaMHpb0JpMENPNEJOZlk/edit?usp=sharing

Here are some Christmas Tags for you!  You can use them as table place markers, gift tags, decorations, or labels for homemade goodies.  However you use them, I hope they bring a bit of Christmas cheer to your holidays!

THE GREATEST FIRE STARTERS - egg carton, lint, & wax

These last few months of Midwest winter usually seem to drag on and on.  Just last week our weather went from 54' to -15' in just a few days (oh, Iowa).  My dad always says that you know you're in Iowa if you've used both your heat and air conditioning on in the same day.

Anyways, one of the things that really gets me through these last few months is cozying up next to a toasty wood stove or fire.  The Man and I were really sad to leave our fireplace when we moved.  Luckily, we were able to find a wood burning stove and install it into the existing chimney just before winter set in!

Well, all that introduction was just to tell you that these fire starters are the greatest.  I have my awesome sister-in-law to thank for the inspiration (she gave a cute little jar of them to me for Christmas).

time: about 20 minutes
makes: 1 doz.
YOU WILL NEED:
1 paperboard egg carton
Dryer lint
Wax

COCONUT SIRACHA BAKED CHICKEN STRIPS

This. Is. Amazing.  Siracha coated chicken strips, covered with panko and coconut, then baked to crispy perfection.  Oh my.

time: 10 minutes prep, 30 minutes baking
makes: 2 servings
YOU WILL NEED:
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into strips
1 egg
1/2 cup coconut flakes
1 cup panko or bread crumbs
1 T. Siracha
1/2 tsp salt

5 MINUTE DIY PERFUMED BODY BUTTER IN THE MICROWAVE - how-to

Just take a sample of your favorite perfume and mix it with a few ingredients and, voila! you have an inexpensive perfumed lotion that is super moisturizing and all-natural (aside from the perfume).  You can also just add a few drops of your favorite perfume or essential oil.

This quick and easy body lotion will have your winter skin glowing and moisturized in no time.  It also makes a really great gift that no one has to know was easy and inexpensive!

Time: about 5 minutes
YOU WILL NEED:
1/2 c. shea butter
1/2 tsp. sweet almond oil
1/2 tsp. avocado oil
1/2 tsp. grated beeswax
perfume sample or essential oil
 4 oz. jar with lid

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the beeswax (about 30 seconds on high).

Add the shea butter and melt (about 20 second on high).

Add the sweet almond and avocado oils.  If they're cold, they may cause the beeswax to harden.  If this happens, microwave for 10 seconds on high or until it is melted again.

Allow to cool until opaque and thickened (it helps to put it in the refrigerator).

Using an egg beater, hand-held mixer, or stand mixer whip until light and fluffy (about 1-2 minutes).

Add your perfume or essential oil and spoon it into your jar.  The free printable labels can be found here.

FELT CAT TEEPEE HIDEAWAY - how-to

This makes a great present for the person in your life who's owned by a cat.  They can hide away inside their little felt teepee and maybe sleep (after dragging all of your laundry around and pouncing at your ankles all day).

*Note, if your cat or the gift recipient's cat is very fat, check to make sure they will fit in the teepee before you go to all of the work of sewing it.  My cat was much too large to fit in the test run teepee - he put his head inside and got stuck (note how well he fills up an entire toilet with himself in this gem of a photograph)

VINTAGE CHRISTMAS CARDS - free printable

Here are some lovely free printable vintage style Christmas cards that I designed.   I was having trouble finding some good cards to send out this year (and I couldn't afford the ridiculous prices!) so I designed my own.  Feel free to click on any of the pictures above to download the pdf files.  You can print them at home or take them to a print shop, where they could probably cut them into cards or postcards for you.  Enjoy!

FELT FALL LEAF GARLAND - how-to

Oh, Fall!  I love, love, love it - all the crunchy leaves, caramel apples, pumpkin everything, hayrides, apple orchards, beautiful colors, and harvest moons.

I wanted to bring the magic of this short season indoors, so I made (da-da-dum) a felt garland of leaves! I wanted to decorate with something that could keep the house looking cozy and happy 'til Thanksgiving and that I could use year after year (provided that I can find it).

Click here for the template that I used.

DIY YARN POM POMS - no tools needed

I love pom poms - they just add so much fun to anything.  Here's a quick step-by-step guide to making your own.  You can make them any size and any level of puffiness that you want.  I've used mine on pillows, hats, mittens, blankets, and slippers, but the possibilities are almost endless!  Have fun!

THE ART OF ARTICHOKES

Artichokes can be really intimidating.  I get stabbed by their little prickers every time I handle them and I hadn't even tried them until I started dating the Man (I thought his family was really fancy because they had artichokes for dinner - blew my mind!).

Now, I love them.  Really, truly.  Just steamed and dipped in garlic butter.  That sweet, earthy goodness and rich melted butter is one of life's greatest eating pleasures.  So, don't be afraid of these angry-looking cousins of the thistle - it is worth every bit of work!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN PUMPKIN GRAPHICS - free printable

Here is a lovely pumpkin graphic for Halloween that I sketched just for you.  You can print it for treat bag tags, cupcake toppers, placeholders for a Halloween party, or just print and frame it for some easy Halloween decor.  Enjoy!

DIY TASSELS - under $5

I love the look of tassels and always have ideas for them around the house, but they're so darn expensive!  Just two tassels run you upwards of $3.00 at most craft stores, which is way too much for me.  So, I decided to make my own!  These were only about 12 cents each and made from embroidery floss.

SUMMERTIME WATERMELON SLUSHIE

Watermelon always gets brought into our house, but usually ends up as a sort of  half-eaten sacrifice to the moldy food gods of the fridge, so I decided to do something about that and actually use it all.  There was too much to eat all at once and it was on the brink of melting into a watery bag of goo and rinds (well, not quite, but I've seen that happen before), so a watermelon slushie was the answer.

YOU WILL NEED:
Blender
1/2 c. ice cubes per cup of watermelon
You can spice it up with any of these things, though I had mine plain and it was great!
lemon or lime juice
sugar, honey, agave, etc.
any type of fruit
mint

Blend up your ingredients until they are smooth and pour into a glass for a frosty, refreshing treat that satisfies a sweet tooth to boot!

WHITE SAUCE (Béchamel, to be fancy) - cooking basics

As I was texting the instructions on how to boil an egg to my panicked guy friend, I had a sort of mini epiphany.  And by mini epiphany, I mean like the one I had when I learned that most people separate lights from darks in the wash.  So I guess I really mean more of a how-have-I-made-it-this-far-in-life-without-this-knowledge-oh-gosh-I-hope-no-one-noticed realization.

I digress.

Béchamel, or white sauce, as we called it growing up, is really versatile and a good basic recipe to have memorized.

I blame our unorthodox upbringing and former-hippie parents for my distaste for the structure of recipes (although I know it's just because I'm too bull-headed to follow them to a T: "who is this person, telling me I must put exactly 1 teaspoon of salt in my salsa!?").  I'm also a firm believer in the idea that if you have the basics down, you can create almost anything.

My husband is a firm believer in me using recipes and timers.  So, in between the experiments and inevitably burnt cookies, we compromise.  And sometimes I leave a cookbook out on the table and pretend like I'm using a recipe.

So, without further ado, here is number one:

Once you've made this once or twice, you won't need measurements, but I'll give you some in case you're a nervous nelly.

TEENY TINY PLANTS IN TEENY TINY POTS

Tiny things get me.  I can't even handle it sometimes, they're just so tiny and cute!  Of course, my Mom knows my weakness for Lilliputian-y things, so she bought me some dollhouse flowerpots, knowing I'd be happy even if all I did was hold them in my hands and squeal with delight at how tiny they were.

But they were destined for bigger and better things.  Er, tiny bigger better things.

I gave this little cactus to The Man and he keeps it on his desk at work.  It's so small that it doesn't get in the way, but it's just something cool to have around and a definite conversation starter.

TOASTED BRIE WITH SPICED PEACH CHUTNEY

My family makes an amazing appetizer at Christmas time that is so simple yet so delicious - it's a block of cream cheese with a horseradish/apricot jam mixture piled onto it.  We eat it with crackers and it is oh-so-delicious, despite how strange it sounds.

I was craving just such a snack, but, as it usually goes in my house, I didn't have apricot jelly and I didn't have cream cheese, and I didn't have crackers.  Then I saw it.  Brie, a whole wedge, forgotten in the cheese drawer, and a jar of Peach chutney (a Christmas gift from my wonderful cook of a big sister) and some tiny melba toasts.  The world is saved.

YOU'LL NEED:
some Brie or Camembert
some tiny toasts or cut up bread
Peach Chutney
or
Some type of fruit jam with a bit of horseradish mixed in (about 1/8 tsp. per T. of Jelly)

INFUSED VODKA - how-to and free printables

I'm always scrambling for gifts at the last minute and I'm always looking for something special and unique that doesn't cost a fortune.  Infused vodkas are a fun gift for anyone who enjoys a great bloody mary or a fancy cocktail.

I actually swiped the corks and cork seals from my parent's stash - their vineyard and winery 99Bottles goes through quite a few every year, so I figured they wouldn't miss them.  Here is a site that you can order corks from here and shrink capsules here.  The corks aren't necessary and you'll likely need a corker if you use them.  If not, you can always just use regular tapered corks and some pretty string or paper over them.  These had to be transported easily (and across state lines) so I though it better to be safe than sorry!

The bottles were $1.00 each at Wal-mart - they're oil and vinegar bottles with the stoppers pulled out.  You can then gift the stoppers with the bottles and the happy recipient will have a pour spout when the bottle is opened.

CRUNCHY CHEESY TACO BAKE - easy one-pan meal

Oh, what to do with that last bit of leftover pasta sauce and the other half pound of ground beef, just waiting for me in the fridge?  It's hard sometimes to cook for just one or two people - you almost always have leftover ingredients.  I really, really didn't want to have spaghetti again, even though it's easy, quick, two-pan allure was calling to me.

Enter, Taco Bake!  It sounds really strange, but I promise you it tastes great.  The best part is that it is so versatile, I ended up using up a lot of leftovers to make it!

Serves: two to three
Time: 15- 20 minutes
YOU WILL NEED:

1/2 lb. ground beef (or turkey, sausage, steak, anything you have)
2 T. spaghetti sauce (or stewed tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, or 2 tsp. tomato paste)
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1/2 onion, chopped
1 jalapeno, chopped
3/4 cup corn (frozen, fresh, or canned)
1 T. sour cream (I used leftover sour cream dip)
1/2 c. crushed chips or hard tortilla shells (Doritos would be good on this)
1/2 c. shredded cheddar cheese(or whatever cheese you have)
1 packet taco seasoning (or:
1 tsp. mexican oregano
1 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. lawrys or salt
1/4 tsp. onion powder)

for garnishing:
(basically anything you like to eat on tacos)
chopped tomatoes
chopped cilantro
chopped avocado, etc.

*Note: If you don't have all the ingredients, don't worry.  You can make this without or with more or less of anything, it's pretty foolproof (and that's half the fun of cooking - making it your own!)

DIY PARCHMENT PAPER MUFFIN CUPS - how-to

I love the look of parchment paper cupcake and muffin wrappers, but the ridiculous cost of them makes it hard to justify buying them.  They look so airy, so fancy!  Everything that you make in them looks like it came from a snooty french bakery!  So, to get both of those wonderful things in life - the affordable and the "hohoho!" fancy french chef - I present to you a tutorial on how to make your own!

Just find a glass that fits into your muffin tin.  Cut a square of parchment paper about 4"x4".  Press it over your glass.  Hard, right?

CUT AN AVOCADO THE EASY WAY - how-to

I'm sure this has been thought of before, but I think it's a handy trick.  Just in case you have ever found yourself thinking "there must be a better way to do this" as you stand by a cutting board smushed with green goosh, trying to figure out how you're going to get the avocado smear out of your hair before turning on the faucet with your elbows, have I got a tip for you.

Okay, so I was channeling an infomercial for some $19.99 piece of crapola just now, but I promise you, this tip is great.  And it's free.  And there's no shipping and handling.

CHILI GRILLED CHICKEN TACOS IN THE BEST SHELLS EVER

These. Taco Shells. Are. Amazing.  They have an impossibly light, crispy crunch and are somehow perfectly simple.  No preservatives, just Corn, Lime, and Shortening.  Oh, heaven.  Oh, and the tacos are great, too.

They're (almost) the star of these cabbage and grilled chicken tacos.

Serves: 2
Time: 15 minutes
YOU WILL NEED:

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 tsp. Chili Powder
4 Taco Shells
1/8 Red Cabbage, sliced in strips
1/2 Cucumber, sliced in strips
1/2 Avocado, Cubed (the easy way to do it is here)
Sour Cream
Some Cheese
(Lime juice, cilantro, tomato optional)

A TIP FOR CLEANING EGGS - keeping backyard chickens

I'd like to say that this idea came to me out of the blue, because I'm great at thinking up clever ways to do things and I just instinctively know all about country living (believe me, even after growing up in the country, there are things you forget about!).

Unfortunately for my pride and ego, this was not the case.

Instead, this idea was born from a sink of dirty dishes and a shirt full of freshly-gathered eggs and nowhere to put them.  I had just made muffins the night before and the pan was in the sink. Then, bing! an idea hit.  Put the eggs in the muffin tin cups while washing them so that they don't roll around the sink and break.

Oh my goodness, this is a great little trick - thank you, sink full of dirty dishes.  I knew there was a reason I keep you around!

QUICK AND EASY UPDATE FOR AN OLD COUCH - before and after

This old couch was looking a bit dated and bottom heavy because of it's fancy-schmancy dust ruffle.  It looked pretty out of place with all of our mid-century modern furniture, so I decided on a risky move- rip off the dust ruffle.

10,000,256 (give or take 10,000,000) staples and the possible need for a tetanus shot later, the deed was done.  Turns out that over-the-top duster was hiding some beautiful and sleek wooden legs!  What a swell find!

Country Bumpkins

It's been so long since my last post!  I've been busy, though - The Man and I just moved out to the country, and it's been quite an adventure already!  The ups and downs and biting-the-fingernails part of selling our first house and buying our dream house is over and we're all moved in.

Okay, so the garage is so full of boxes and moving things that we can't even park in it yet, but the last time we moved, I still had things packed in boxes by the second Christmas, so I'm calling this a win.

I promise to post some more good things here soon!

Going Away Party Theme Idea - Bon Voyage Party Free Download Printables

A friend recently moved out of state and we threw a "Bon Voyage" theme party for her.  It seems less sad than a goodbye party and it can also work if someone you know is about to travel, study abroad, or even graduate.  Here's a picture of the theme and on the next page you'll find free downloadable printables for you to throw your own!

GRILLED POBLANO SKILLET SWEET CORN - easy side dish

Oh, me-oh-my, this is tasty stuff.  It was born out of necessity (it was 95* that day and I wasn't keen on heating up the house) but I've grown to love it.  The corn gets slightly carmelized, the peppers add some heat, and the whole thing tastes like smok-y, grill-y, summertime!

Serves: 2, can be doubled easily
Prep Time: depends on how fast you are with a chopping knife
Cook Time: 10 minutes
YOU NEED:
1 1/2 cups frozen sweet corn
1/4 poblano pepper, diced
1/4 onion, diced (or minced onion)
1/2 T. butter
salt and pepper to taste (I like to just use Lawry's or a little beef boullion)

GRILLED PORK CHOPS, SPICY GARLIC ROASTED POTATOES, CUCUMBER SOUR CREAM BITES - dinner menu ideas

It's kind of a drag to think that I'll be planning thousands and thousands of meals in my lifetime...many served to ungrateful little munchkins and grumpy teenagers.  I'm trying to embrace this time when I'm still excited to cook every night after work, and also trying to make it healthy food so that I'm around to cook those thousands of meals for my future band of rowdy of munchkins.

Here's a crowd-pleaser that's fast, easy, and only dirties a knife, a cutting board, and a cookie sheet (and that has parchment on it, so cleaning's a breeze!) oh, and you'll dirty your serving dishes... unless you eat it with your hands. wierdo.

YOU WILL NEED:
(dinner for two, easily double or centupled)

2 pork chops
1 Cucumber, sliced
1 T. Sour cream
1/4 tsp. Ranch Dip Mix (recipe here)
2 medium sized russet potatoes, diced
Fresh Ground Black Pepper
Red Pepper Flakes
Seasoning Salt (Lawry's is the best!)
3 Cloves Garlic, chopped
Olive oil
Lettuce for a salad and some trimmings (Avocado, carrots, cheese, tomato, etc.)

EASY RANCH DIP MIX - gluten free and no MSG

We eat ranch dressing at an alarming rate in out house.  Very alarming.  Like, a bottle every two weeks alarming.  So, in the name of our budget and our arteries' health, I decided it was time to do something about this little problem of ours.

So, I made our own ranch dip mix.

I know what you're thinking, it's still ranch, which is the Fatty McFatterson of the dressing world.

Well, it is still not that good for you, but at least now I know that there aren't any weird preservatives in the ranch and I can easily sprinkle it on something or mix it with some yogurt and milk or sour cream and milk for a quick ranch dressing.  It's kind of become my go-to spice for everything now...

YOU WILL NEED:

Parsley Flakes
Celery Salt
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Dill Weed
Buttermilk powder (optional)

In equal parts, mix these dry ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Voila!  Much less guilt involved and it's cheap to boot!
